Today, we celebrate Wonder Woman’s 75th anniversary by reviewing her first appearance in comic books – All-Star Comics #8.
All-Star Comics #8 had a December 1941 cover date, but October 25, 1941 is recognized as the day it hit stores. DC Comics called last Friday, October 21 as Wonder Woman’s 75th anniversary. Either way, it is time to celebrate Diana Prince.
This comic book is actually almost completely a Justice Society of America story. The first 60 plus pages are a JSA comic, with only 9 pages devoted to Wonder Woman’s origin in the back.
What did William Moulton Marston accomplish in those 9 pages? A whole bunch. The story starts with Captain Steven Trevor crash-landing onto Paradise Island and continues as the Amazons compete to be chosen to take him back to America.
This comic gives us the back story of the Amazons and introduces us to many important parts of Wonder Woman’s mythology. This served as an introduction to the character that continued in Sensation Comics #1.
On this podcast, we review the story and characters involved in the comic and talk about how this origin story holds up and could be involved with the 2017 Wonder Woman film.
