The Justice League is finally coming to the big screen on November 17, 2017. This has excited DC comics fans everywhere, but also leads to questions of which characters will make up the team. DC’s iconic band of superheroes has had a rotating roster since their first appearance in March of 1960. So what is the Justice League movie roster?
The first justice league movie will focus on the 6 core superheroes: Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, The Flash, Aquaman, and Cyborg. The first 5 were original founding members in the comics, along with Green Lantern and Martian Manhunter. The New 52 roster include those core 6 members along with Green Lantern.
Superman / Clark Kent
The Last Son of Krypton is the first superhero and of the most iconic fictional characters of all-time. Henry Cavill will portray Superman in Justice League after previously playing the role in Man of Steel and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. While the ending of Batman v Superman might have raised some questions about his role in Justice League, you can be confident that Warner Bros. wouldn’t keep Superman out of one of their most important movies yet.
Superman is the most powerful character on this roster and one of the most powerful beings in all of comics. Born on the planet Krypton before being sent to Earth as an infant, his unique physiology gives him superpowers such as strength, speed, heat vision, and the power of flight.
Batman / Bruce Wayne
Batman is one of the most popular characters in popular culture today, thanks to many successful appearances in comic books, movies, tv, and video games. Ben Affleck will return to the role of Bruce Wayne / Batman after debuting in the role in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and filming a cameo for Suicide Squad. The ending of that film shows him with a need to form a team of superheroes. He knows that a threat is coming due to other events in the film, including an important cameo from The Flash.
While Batman has no super powers, he is usually one of the most important characters on the Justice League lineup. He is an incredible fighter, although that isn’t always enough when fighting alien threats. His incredible tactical mind is great for coming up with strategies to attack the villain.
Wonder Woman / Diana Prince
Wonder Woman is the most powerful and popular fictional superheroine ever. Gal Gadot will return to the role after playing the character in both Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and her solo Wonder Woman film, due out in June of 2017. While she has kept herself out of struggle’s in recent decades, her interactions with Batman and Superman have convinced her that she needs to return to her heroic ways.
Wonder Woman is one of the few DC Comics heroes who can hold her own against Superman. She is an Amazon who comes from an ancient island of women called Themyscira. She has superhuman strength and speed and might be the best fighter on this team, having been raised as a warrior from birth.
The Flash / Barry Allen
The Flash is one of the most powerful heroes in all of DC Comics. While running incredibly fast is nice in its own right, that speed allows him to perform many incredible feats. Ezra Miller returns to the role after debuting with an extended cameo in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and a minor cameo in Suicide Squad. This is a different version of the character from Grant Gustin’s TV interpretation, although they will likely share many similarities.
Barry Allen is a forensic scientist by day who also performs acts of heroism as The Flash. He is able to travel at incredible speeds and tap into the speed force, which allows him to do many other things. In may versions of the comics, this allows him to travel through time and into other dimensions. This is something that is used heavily in the TV series and that is briefly alluded to in Batman v Superman.
Aquaman / Arthur Curry
Aquaman has been a joke to some for many years because of his campy portrayal in some older comics and animated television series. Jason Momoa’s version of the character will certainly not be a joke, as the character will be serious, similar to more recent comic book stories. Aquaman is one of the most powerful characters on this roster and is capable of much more than just swimming really fast and communicating with sea life. Momoa first appeared as the character in a small role in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.
Arthur Curry is the reluctant king of Atlantis, the underwater kingdom. His father was a surface-dwelling human, but his mother was Atlantean, giving him unique powers. Many joke that he can just swim fast and talk to fish, but his physiology gives him incredible strength, both underwater and on land. He also carries an incredibly powerful trident as a weapon.
Cyborg / Victor Stone
Cyborg is the most recent addition to the Justice League comics out of the characters on this list. However, his connection to technology can make him one of the most relatable characters in today’s world. The Mother Box technology that helped save his life also has a connection to the villain of the story – Steppenwolf, Darkseid, and his parademons. Ray Fisher will return as the character after having a minor role in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.
Victor Stone was a football player who was horribly injured in accident, but his life was saved by his scientist father, Silas Stone. Victor was given a tech based suit and became known as Cyborg. His suit gives him powers such as super strength as well as access to advanced technology.
While this will be the main roster for the first Justice League film, that doesn’t mean that these will be the only heroes to appear. Many other characters could cameo in the movie or be saved for sequels.
